Bengaluru, April 2026:
In a move aimed at aligning technical education with employment trends, an expert committee in Karnataka has recommended restructuring engineering course seats across colleges.
The proposal suggests redistributing seats without increasing the total intake, based on placement trends and industry demand. Notably, the committee has advised a gradual reduction in oversupplied disciplines such as traditional computer science streams, while increasing seats in high-demand areas like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, and Cybersecurity.
The plan includes strict accreditation norms, limits on student intake per discipline, and mandatory project-based learning every semester. Institutions with poor placement records or high vacancy rates may face reduced intake.
Education experts believe this reform could significantly improve graduate employability and reduce the mismatch between education supply and industry demand. The initiative is also expected to produce a larger number of industry-ready graduates by 2030.
